A Simple Guide to Using Public Transport in Cork City

Getting around Cork is easy once you understand the basics. Whether you’re travelling to class, heading home after a long day, or planning a weekend trip, this guide will help you feel confident using public transport in Cork.

In Cork, most city buses are operated by Bus Éireann. Buses connect the city centre with residential areas, student accommodation, shopping centres and nearby towns.

How it works:

•               Wait at a marked bus stop.

•               Signal the driver as the bus approaches.

•               Enter at the front of the bus.

•               Pay using a Leap Card or cash.

Buses usually run every 10–30 minutes depending on the route and time of day.

A TFI Leap Card is the easiest and cheapest way to travel on public transport in Cork.

Student Leap Card

If you are studying with us for 6 months or more, you can apply for a Student Leap Card, which gives you discounted fares and is the best option for long-term students.

Regular Leap Card

If you’re studying for a shorter period, you can still get a standard Leap Card. These are sold in many shops around Cork city — for example, you can buy one in Centra on Patrick Street and other convenience stores.

With Cork city buses, you simply tap your Leap Card when boarding. You do not need to tap off when leaving.

You can also pay cash on city buses, which is useful if you don’t have a Leap Card yet.

•               It’s best to have exact change, as drivers usually cannot give change.

•               Cash fares are more expensive than Leap Card fares.

•               Cards are generally not accepted onboard, so contactless payment isn’t usually available.

For regular travel, a Leap Card is strongly recommended because it’s cheaper and much more convenient.

Cork’s main train station is Kent Station. From here, you can travel to destinations such as Cobh, Midleton, Killarney, Tralee and Dublin. Trains are comfortable and ideal for weekend trips.

Helpful tips:

•               Arrive about 10 minutes before departure.

•               Check departure screens for platform information.

•               Keep your ticket accessible for inspection.

Cork also has a public bike-sharing scheme called TFI Bikes. It’s a simple and affordable way to travel short distances around the city centre.

You’ll find bike stations at various locations across Cork. To use the service, you can:

• Register online through the TFI Bikes website

• Use the TFI Bikes app

• Choose a short-term subscription (great for visitors) or an annual membership

Once registered, you unlock a bike at a station, cycle to your destination, and return it to another station. The first 30 minutes are usually included in your subscription, making it a very cost-effective option for quick trips.

TFI Bikes are perfect for:

• Getting to class quickly

• Moving around the city centre

• A scenic cycle along the river

• A sustainable, eco-friendly way to travel

It’s a flexible and healthy alternative to buses, especially in good weather.

The simplest way to plan your route is by using the Transport for Ireland journey planner online or through their mobile app. It shows routes, times, maps and live updates. Just enter your starting point and destination and follow the suggested steps.

Cork city centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. Many students combine walking with bus travel. You may only need a bus for longer distances such as:

•               Accommodation outside the centre

•               Residential suburbs

•               Shopping centres

•               Beaches and nearby towns

•               Always check the route number and destination on the front of the bus.

•               Press the stop button before your stop.

•               Keep coins handy just in case.

•               Expect buses to be busier during rush hour.

Public transport in Cork is simple, affordable and student-friendly. After just a few journeys, it becomes second nature, and it’s one of the easiest ways to experience everything the city has to offer.
