PCTO – Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e l’Orientamento
OVERVIEW
WHO IS IT FOR?
COURSE OBJECTIVES
ACCOMMODATION
Across education, work, and everyday activities, there are essential skills that can be applied in many different contexts. Competencies such as critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving are highly valued, while strong communication skills in English, along with research and presentation abilities, are increasingly important in an international environment.
Building on this, Cork English College delivers programmes that support the aims of the Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e l’Orientamento (PCTO). These courses are designed to help students develop key transferable skills while enhancing their English language proficiency through immersive learning.
The programmes are tailored for students preparing for further education or future careers, combining practical activities with structured language training. Developed by experienced educators, they are specifically designed to meet the needs of international learners, particularly Italian students aged 16–19.
In today’s fast-paced and competitive world, Cork English College provides students with the tools, confidence, and global perspective needed to progress successfully in both academic and professional pathways.
At Cork English College, the PCTO programme integrates academic learning, practical experience, and English language development within an international setting. The course is carefully designed around the needs of each student, creating a personalised, engaging, and supportive learning experience that encourages active participation and progress.
Through a combination of interactive tasks, group work, workshops, and real-life scenarios, students develop key transferable skills such as communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork. At the same time, they build confidence in using English in practical, everyday contexts, improving both fluency and accuracy.
The programme supports students in preparing for further education and future careers, equipping them with valuable skills, greater independence, and a global perspective needed to succeed in today’s competitive and fast-changing world.
Furthermore participants are encouraged to reflect on their learning goals, monitor their progress, and receive continuous feedback from experienced teachers to ensure consistent improvement and meaningful outcomes throughout the entire programme duration in a structured and motivating environment.
The programme aligns with the requirements of the Italian Alternanza Scuola Lavoro (PCTO) initiative, helping students prepare for future study and professional pathways. English is not taught in isolation; instead, it is developed through active use in a range of engaging tasks such as collaborative projects, problem-solving exercises, and group-based activities.
This method encourages students to build confidence, think independently, and develop key transferable skills, while naturally improving their ability to communicate effectively in English. Additionally learners are exposed to authentic materials and real-world contexts that promote deeper understanding and cultural awareness.
Teachers guide students through structured reflection, helping them identify strengths, address challenges, and set achievable goals. Regular feedback and assessment support continuous progress and motivation, ensuring that each participant gains practical experience alongside language development.
By the end of the programme, students demonstrate improved confidence, stronger communication abilities, and readiness for both academic and professional environments in an increasingly globalised and competitive world today overall experience benefits.
All of our PCTO groups are placed in locally based Host Families on a full-board basis. These carefully selected families provide a welcoming and supportive environment where students can experience daily life in an English-speaking context.
Accommodation includes comfortable bedrooms, shared living spaces, and access to essential facilities to ensure a pleasant stay. Students receive breakfast, packed lunch, and dinner each day, allowing them to focus fully on their studies and activities. Living with host families encourages cultural exchange, helping learners practise English naturally through conversation and everyday interaction.
Families are experienced in hosting international students and are committed to providing guidance, support, and a safe atmosphere. This arrangement also promotes independence, responsibility, and confidence as students adapt to new routines and environments.
Overall the accommodation experience plays a key role in enhancing both language development and personal growth during the programme period abroad with positive outcomes for participants throughout their stay in Ireland and beyond future opportunities arise.
