The Cork International Choral Festival

Hello again, we are back with another blog post for you this week. This time it’s to let you know what’s on in Cork for this Bank Holiday weekend!

We know most people tend to flock to the late-night bars, but we wanted to give you another more family orientated option with activities and gigs on during the day for all ages, so we are recommending you check out the amazing and long-standing Cork International Choral Festival which begins today!

You can see their launch video below to give you an idea of what’s to come:

This is one of Cork’s oldest festivals, having been founded in 1954 and is held annually over the five days preceding the first Monday in May in venues across the city. It’s basically an event where tonnes of international and national amateur Choirs compete here in Cork for the prestigious Fleischmann International Trophy.

According to a recent article by Cork Beo, we have hundreds of nationalities visiting for this year’s event:

“It’s expected to be a busy weekend for Cork Airport with more than 5000 performers expected to fly in from across the globe. The huge cultural event will welcome musicians from the UK and Europe as well as from countries further afield like Canada and the Republic of Burundi in East Africa”

The festivities kicked off this morning with a gig in Nano Nagle place, and there will be Gala concerts, educational workshops and competition events to come.

You can see posts about the events and how to sign up to them on their Facebook and Instagram page, and you can find more information on their website by clicking here.  The concerts might be a good place to start if you’re not already into the Choral music scene, they have a list of the concerts for the week here:

The Choral Festival draws a great international crowd into Cork each May and has the city buzzing with music and laughter, it’s one of our favourite things to do in the summer and we highly recommend checking it out.

That’s all from us this week, if you do head out to any of the events on for the festival be sure to tag us @corkenglishcollege.ie
