What To Pack for Ireland in The Summer

Our busy season has arrived, we have hundreds of students on route to Cork for English courses and can’t wait to meet you all this summer! You might be thinking of packing for your trip to Cork like any other sun holiday but that’s where you’re wrong. Ireland can experience 4 seasons in a single day, especially in the summertime so we wanted to give you a definitive summer packing list before you set off so that you have everything you need:

1. Waterproof Jacket

Rain is a common companion in Ireland, even in the summer. A good quality, lightweight waterproof jacket is essential. Look for one with a hood to keep you dry during unexpected downpours. Trust us, you’ll be thankful for it when you’re exploring the Cliffs of Moher or wandering through the streets of Cork City.

2. Comfortable Walking Shoes

Ireland’s beauty is best explored on foot honestly, whether you are pub hopping around Cork City, or trying to get up Torq waterfall in Killarney on your Paddy Wagon tour comfort is king. opt for waterproof options to keep your feet dry and happy.

3. Sun Protection

Yes, it does get sunny in Ireland! When the sun does make an appearance, it can be quite strong. Even when it isn’t sunny, you can oftentimes get what we call “windburn” from the fierce winds and the UV. Bring along sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from sunburn and glare.

4. Travel Adapter

Ireland uses a different plug type (Type G) and voltage (230V) compared to many other countries. Make sure to pack a travel adapter so you can charge your electronics. It’s a small item that can save you a lot of hassle.

5. Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated while traveling is important. Bring a reusable water bottle to fill up on the go. Many places in Ireland have clean and safe tap water, so this will also help you reduce plastic waste. Plus, it’s handy to have water with you when exploring the great outdoors.

6. Backpack or Daypack

A small backpack or daypack is perfect for carrying your daily essentials. Whether it’s your waterproof jacket, a camera, snacks, or souvenirs, having a convenient bag makes day trips easier. Look for one with comfortable straps and multiple compartments for organization.

7. Layers

Irish weather is famously unpredictable. One minute you’re basking in sunshine, the next you’re seeking shelter from a sudden shower. Pack light, breathable layers that you can easily add or remove. Think t-shirts, light sweaters, and a medium-weight jacket. This way, you’ll be comfortable no matter what the weather throws at you.

8. Swimsuit

While Ireland might not be known for its tropical vibes, we do have a surprising number of beautiful beaches and swimming spots in Cork within easy commute from the city. A swimsuit will come in handy if you decide to take a refreshing swim at Inchydoney Beach, relax at a local spa, or try out the Wild Atlantic Way’s stunning swimming spots. Plus, many accommodations have pools, and there are some fantastic natural swimming spots to explore.

9. Light Scarf or Shawl

A light scarf or shawl is a versatile item to pack. It can provide an extra layer of warmth on cooler days or evenings, protect you from the sun, or be used as a picnic blanket. It’s a stylish and practical addition to your travel wardrobe.

10. An umbrella!

Even with a waterproof jacket, an umbrella is a handy addition to your packing list. It’s perfect for those sudden showers when you want to keep both yourself and your belongings dry. Choose a compact, foldable umbrella that fits easily into your bag, so you can always have it on hand.
