Exploring Cork’s Rich Heritage: Top 5 Events During National Heritage Week 2024

As we approach National Heritage Week, which runs from August 17th to 25th, there’s no better way to immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant history and culture. We have the National Open Day of course where all of Corks oldest buildings open their doors one day a year to let you have a peak behind the curtain, along with plenty of other tours, talks and workshops throughout the week to help you learn about Corks rich history and backround under this years theme of connections, routes and networks. Here are five must-see events:

1. Cork Heritage Open Day August 17th

On this date each year, over 40 of Cork’s iconic buildings open their doors to the public for a day of exploration. Additionally, there are 10 guided tours across various parts of the city, including Douglas Street, Jewtown, the Victorian Quarter, the Middle Parish, and the Coal Quay, offering unique insights into Cork’s history and architecture. 2. Mother Jones and her Children, a documentary followed by a discussion: 20th of August, 11am – 1pm

Watch a documentary about the life of Mother Jones, a labor and community activist with strong ties to Cork, followed by a discussion. This event will examine the birth of Mary Harris here in Cork in 1837, her baptism in the North Cathedral nearby, her life and her impact on labor rights and social justice. It’s an excellent chance to engage in thoughtful discussion while improving your English listening and speaking skills.

3. The boys are back in Town – Phil Lynott: 21st of August, 11:30am – 12:30pm

Celebrate Cork’s rich musical heritage with this music appreciation event focusing on Thin Lizzy, one of Ireland’s most iconic rock bands. The event will explore the band’s influence on Irish and global music, with a deep dive into their hit song “The Boys Are Back in Town.” This is a great opportunity for music lovers to expand their English vocabulary in a fun and engaging environment while learning about an essential part of Irish rock history.

4. The Lough and its Curiosities: 22nd of August, 6:30pm – 8:30pm

Join a guided tour around the Lough, a significant natural and historical site in Cork ran by our last Lord Mayor Cllr Kieran McCarthy. Learn about the area’s unique biodiversity, its historical significance, and the curiosities that make the Lough a beloved spot for locals. This event offers a unique opportunity to learn about Cork’s natural heritage while expanding your vocabulary related to nature and history in a relaxed, outdoor setting.

5. Cork Urban History Walk: 24th of August, 2:30pm – 4pm

Embark on a walking tour through Cork’s historic streets, exploring its transformation from medieval origins to the modern city it is today. The tour covers significant sites from Nano Nagle Bridge to North Gate Bridge via Grand Parade and the Bridewell. This walk is perfect for those looking to enhance their knowledge of Cork’s urban development while practicing their English in a real-world context.
