Cork World Book Fest

We are back with another blog post for you this week, this time we are talking about Cork World Book Fest. Each year, Cork turns into a book lover’s dream for a week, and we hold a cultural street fair in the city centre with spoken world, street entertainment, music, readings and amazing food.

Cork really is the capital of culture in Ireland, and that sentiment is reflected in the fact that we invite the world’s cultures to show up and share their literary world with us for this week each year- and they always do. All this week there were talks and book readings by authors from all over the world in the two main fest venues, the Cork City Library, and the Triskel Art centre.

We were taking a look at their YouTube channel to see if they’ve made any fun videos for this year’s fest, and we found their 2021 launch video which we think is worth a watch, they’re literally throwing books in the air:

If you were working all week and you want to soak up some culture this weekend, here are some of our recommendations for interesting things you can see, do, and experience:

  • A talk on Irish Crime writing Friday @5pm in Triskel Christchurch- Free
  • Queering the Green-LGBTQ+ poetry from Ireland- Friday @8pm Triskel Christchurch- Free
  • Spoken words and music – Saturday @ 12.00 pm at Carnegie Courtyard off Tuckey Street- Free
  • “The limits of my language are the limits of my world”- Saturday @ 4.15pm in Cork City Library-Free
  • Paul Muldoon-A Call to Poetry storytelling- Saturday @8pm in Triskel Christchurch- €5
  • Rapid Fire Fiction from Fiction at the Friary- Sunday @3pm in Cork City Library-Free

Plenty of talks and readings have already taken place this week and it looks like it’s going really well with a great turnout.

Lastly, we’d recommend that you get some food and buy some books at the market stalls open on the grand parade in front of the city library from 10am-4pm on Saturday. You can see a full list of the weeks activities by clicking here.

To close us out, here are some books our staff are currently reading:

Rosalyn-Marketing exec: The Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson

Niamh-Admissions officer: Power and Knowledge by Michel Facault
