With the Cork on a Fork Food Festival taking place this weekend, we will visit Shandon Sweets and the famous English Market.

Shandon Sweets is a legendary, family-run traditional sweet factory and shop located in the historic Shandon Quarter of Cork City. Established in the late 1920s and run across generations by the Linehan family, it operates as one of Ireland’s last remaining traditional handmade sweet makers. Here you’ll find sweets that are crafted by hand using vintage, early 20th-century machinery and simple, pure ingredients (sugar, glucose, water, and natural flavors).

The English Market is a famous, covered municipal food market first opened in 1788. Located between Grand Parade and Princes Street, it is a bustling social hub offering local artisan foods, fresh fish, craft meats, and traditional Cork specialties like tripe and drisheen. You will have the chance to explore the Market at your own pace and discover Craft Butchers selling local meats, poultry, and traditional spiced beef. Fresh Fishmongers serving daily catches from Atlantic waters displayed on crushed ice. Artisan Produce like farmhouse cheeses, organic fruits and vegetables, and global delicacies. There are also Cafes and Eateries, popular spots like the Farmgate Café upstairs, overlooking the main market floor.
